Students who require extra support or particular learning strategies to aid their English language acquisition are provided for at La Garenne. Many of our students speak several languages and we value those languages. However, the language of instruction within the English section is English and so the children are assessed when they arrive at La Garenne and their need for EAL support is addressed.
EAL lessons cater for the acquisition of English, which includes grammar and general vocabulary. During the Literacy lessons the students are pulled out to work with a specialist teacher to help attain English proficiency that would allow them to access the curriculum and achieve academically within their own year group. Once these students have reached the required level they return to their class for English. In these sessions the students are given more opportunities to practice the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
The students are immersed within their class for all of the other subjects throughout the day.
These intensive English sessions help the non-English speakers to receive personal attention and feel less overwhelmed by the challenges of learning a new language and following a different school program.
