Support for Learners

We pride ourselves on supporting students with mild to moderate learning needs as well as those who are gifted. Classroom teachers work closely with the Learning Support specialist to identify, support and monitor students who require additional help, or extension and challenge.

What we do

  • enable students to become independent learners and to monitor their own progress
  • develop self-esteem and positive attitudes about school and learning
  • assist students to participate in the curriculum appropriate for their age
  • provide additional teaching and support
  • involve parents in supporting their children through effective communication
  • promote collaboration amongst teachers to implement whole-school policies on learning support
  • develop appropriate individual teaching programmes
  • intervene to enhance learning and reduce difficulties in learning

Individual Educational Plan

An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is created for each child receiving support from the Learning Support teacher. The plan is discussed with parents whose involvement in and backing for the plan is crucial. Teaching Assistants can be used in class for one-to-one support. The IEPs of students are regularly evaluated and updated.

Specialist Referral

Sometimes, it is necessary to seek the opinion of outside specialists. This is always done with the parents' permission. We work closely with a team of experts and therapists who conduct assessments where necessary. The costs of these are billed to the parents. La Garenne facilitates communication between therapist and parent, and we encourage the sharing of information with us if appropriate.

Previous Assessments

Parents of new students should ensure that the school is informed about any existing IEP or learning difficulty to enable rapid referral to learning support.

Emotional Support

Our Learning Support specialist works closely with the head of boarding, parents and the school nurse in order to promote self-esteem and positive attitudes to school and learning. Students attend age-appropriate workshops on various topics including sexuality and mental health. Students of all ages take part in PSHE lessons to promote personal, social and health education.
