La Garenne has been run by the Méan family for decades. This continuity is at the heart of the school’s “Family Away from Home” approach, creating a close-knit boarding community in which each student is known, supported and cared for. Boarding is available across the Primary, Middle and Senior sections. Students live in age-appropriate residences supported by resident boarding staff, with academic, pastoral and extracurricular life organised as an integrated school experience.
La Garenne welcomes approximately 200 boarders from more than 40 countries. Boarding is organised across three age-specific residences for Primary, Middle and Senior students. Full-time House Parents and boarding staff live in each house, providing daily supervision, pastoral support and consistent care from wake up routines to evening check-ins. The ratio of Boarding Staff to Students is 2:1. Students also have access to counselling, wellbeing and safeguarding support throughout the school.

RECEPTION & PRE-RECEPTION (ages 3 to 5)
La Garenne welcomes children from the age of 3. Our Early Years Centre offers a warm, homely environment where each child is guided gently through their first steps in learning.
Learning in Pre-Reception and Reception is structured by the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with regular experiences inspired by Forest School philosophy and principles that extend learning beyond the classroom. The programme combines play, exploration and hands-on learning to develop independence, creativity, inquiry and problem-solving, while preparing children for Primary School.
La Garenne's approach to teaching and learning provides a strong foundation from the early years onwards, combining academic rigour with creativity, wellbeing and personal development.
PRIMARY SCHOOL (ages 5 to 11)
Students aged 5-11 at La Garenne International Primary School follow the English National Curriculum (ENC) and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) within a personalised and creative learning environment. This approach combines traditional foundations with innovative teaching, ensuring academic rigour while supporting each student’s individual pace and style of learning. It places strong emphasis on both academic and personal development, preparing students for a smooth transition into the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
But growing up is about more than just academics. In these formative years, we guide students as they begin to take more responsibility, develop independence, and learn to care for themselves and others. We focus on their wellbeing - encouraging outdoor play, building friendships, and developing resilience in a safe, supportive setting. IB Middle Years Programme & IGCSE (ages 11 to 16)
Students in Years 7-9, who are aged 11-14, follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). The programme develops subject knowledge, inquiry, interdisciplinary learning and independent study skills, while supporting students with a wide range of abilities.
In Years 10 and 11, for ages 14-16, students study a range of subjects leading to externally assessed International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) qualifications. These internationally recognised qualifications prepare students for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or the La Garenne High School Diploma.
IB DIPLOMA & HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES (AGES 16 TO 18)
After passing IGCSEs, La Garenne students aged 16-18 can choose between two senior academic pathways: the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the High School Diploma. Flexible subject choices allow students to align their studies with their academic strengths, interests and future university plans. Classes of up to 12 students provide personalised support, with a focus on research and real-world learning.

La Garenne has two campuses in Villars-sur-Ollon, located just five minutes apart on foot. The Primary and Middle School Campus comprises four traditional Swiss chalets with dedicated buildings for learning, boarding and student wellbeing.
Chalet La Garenne accommodates Primary School boarders in Years 1-6. Chalet Beau Site accommodates boarders in Years 7-9. For teaching purposes, the Millennium building houses classrooms for Reception to Year 3, while the Academia building provides dedicated learning spaces for students in Years 4-9.

Le Roc, La Garenne’s Secondary Campus, is an architectural landmark. Located next to the main Villars ski lift, the building combines traditional Alpine architecture with contemporary design and brings senior learning, boarding and community life together in one building. The campus includes bright twin en-suite bedrooms with views of the surrounding Alps, classrooms, a design studio, fitness centre, refectory, libraries, and a flexible community space. Le Roc is designed to support academic focus, independent living and delivers a strong sense of community for senior students.
