Assembly this Monday

Assembly

The assembly this week was presented by the Year 6 class. Their IPC unit this term is 'Champions For Change'. Throughout the tasks in this unit, the children are working in teams to develop political party and campaign for change in their school and local area. The purpose is for the children to experience the campaign process and to learn about the systems of government in their home and host countries, as well as the varying types of government around the world.

During the assembly, the children split into two teams. The yellow team presented an argument to finish school at 15:15 each day and the blue team gave the opposing argument. Each spokesperson took it in turns, they spoke with confidence and clarity and delivered a very convincing point of view. We were then invited to vote for the team that gave the best argument.

Well done Year 6!

Academic Blog: Meet our new teacher

This term we welcomed a new Maths teacher to La Garenne. Lucy graduated from York University with a BA (Hons) in Politics before being awarded her PGCE from Birmingham City University in 2014.

She has taught Maths in several schools in the UK before joining us and will be teaching Maths to the children in Year 7, 8 and 9 as well as taking the role of class tutor to Year 8. She has already made a big impact on the children she teaches and is enthusiastically involved in the life of the school as demonstrated last weekend when she joined Year 8 on their expedition to Solalex.

Year 1 & 2 - Parcours Vita Bex

We had a super afternoon running along the trails in the forest at Bex. The sun shone and the children impressed us with their perseverance and enthusiasm. We completed the 15 stations with exercises to test our endurance, strength, mobility and agility. The children were able to describe how they felt before, during and after the activities and how their bodies were affected.

Well done Year 1 & 2 for your big smiles and positive energy :)

Fabulous Friday - Mini Section

Academic Blog

As we approach the weekend, let's have a look at what the Minis have been up to.

Assembly

The assembly this week was celebrating the importance of teamwork. The children were put in mixed age groups and asked to work together to complete their challenge. We discussed the importance of collaboration, perseverance and listening, respecting and encouraging one another. It was wonderful to see the children supporting one another.

Library

Each class visit the school library on a weekly basis. This is an important opportunity for the children to spend some quiet time engrossed in their chosen book. The children are able to use the library computer system to check their books in and out.

Year 3 & 4

Year 3 & 4 made edible Earths for their entry point to Active Planet. They used cherries for the Inner Core, marshmallows for the Outer Core, rice crispies for the Mantle and chocolate for the crust! They had to use their communication skills to work as a team and take turns.

Year 5

Year 5 had a great time making models of the Roman Coliseum and a Roman Village for their entry point. Their IPC unit this term is 'The Great, The Bold & The Brave'. During the science lesson this week the children had to dissect a flower and identify the main features.

Year 6

The Year 6 are enjoying their IPC unit, 'Champion for Change' and in science they have been working out the correct order of the Linnaean classification system.

Year 1 & 2

This morning, the children in Year 1 & 2, worked in pairs to tell a story using a story map, they used lots of fantastic connectives. They shared their news and wrote about their weekend.

They also enjoyed their maths lesson which was all about ordinal numbers.

The children worked together to understand the IPC personal goals, they have created a super display on their classroom door to demonstrate the importance of these qualities.

The 8 personal goals are:

Enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability.

These 8 categories are what makes up our points system - eprasie.
