Year 3 and 4 went by local transport to the Ice Age Exhibition in Rennaz. They had to check the times, numbers and platforms for each bus to make sure they got there and back on time! They enjoyed saving carbon emissions and being global citizens.

The exhibition was full of exciting models of prehistoric animals. Some of them even moved and made noises! They used pencils and charcoal to sketch a variety of animals and they practiced their French by reading the information signs and completing a challenging quiz. 

For lunch they had a special treat… McDonald’s followed by a quick play in the fun house before heading back to school. A great trip to coincide with their IPC topic Scavengers and Settlers.

During our assembly we celebrated International Book Giving Day which is all about sharing the love of books! International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books and to get books into the hands of as many children as possible. Most children in developing countries do not own books. In the United Kingdom, one-third of children do not own books. In the United States, two-thirds of children living in poverty do not own books.

Here at La Garenne we are very lucky and have access to a number of books in our classrooms and library. Four book marks have been hidden in some books in our library, the lucky children to find them will be able to choose a book from Amazon. 

Each week we learn about someone who inspires us through their actions. Linking to International Book Giving Day, we celebrated the fantastic work of Maria Keller, who at the age of 8 years old created Read Indeed, a non-profit organisation dedicated to collecting and distributing books to children in need. She is now 16 and has collected over 2.8 million books around the world. 

Well done to our Stars of the Week, this week our value was Adaptability

On Tuesday the 18th of February, our MYP students learned about drugs and addictions with Mr Bob Tait, a guest speaker from the UK, who has a wealth of experience in delivering presentations to young people. The main aim of the presentation was to raise student awareness of drug misuse and to give them the facts needed to make an informed choice about drugs, both during their school life and as an adult. 

Some of our students were given the opportunity to try the Fatal Vision Goggles. These goggles allowed the students to experience the effects of alcohol, marijuana, a concussion, or drowsy or distracted driving firsthand.

Thank you Ardentist for coming into school to talk to the children about the improtance of looking after our teeth. The dentist told the children about how to prevent tooth decay, the importance of limiting sugary drinks and food and she demonstrated to the children how best to brush their teeth.
